Outlook Delay Delivery on Your Computer (Desktop App)
Where the delayed email lives: On your computer
How it works
  • When you schedule an email with Delay Delivery, Outlook does NOT send it to the server yet.
  • Instead, the message stays in your Outbox on your PC.
  • It will only send at the scheduled time if Outlook is open and your computer is connected to the internet.
What this means in practice
  • If your computer is off, asleep, or Outlook is closed, the email won’t send until you open Outlook again.
  • This is the most “old‑school” version of delay delivery because it depends on your device.

Outlook.com Delay Delivery (Web Version)
Where the delayed email lives: On Microsoft’s servers
How it works
  • Just like the mobile app, Outlook.com schedules the message on the server side.
  • Once you click “Send later,” the message is stored in the cloud and will send automatically at the scheduled time.
What this means
  • You don’t need your computer or browser open.
  • The email will send even if you’re offline.
