EIT exclusively recommends the following programs for malware prevention and removal. We highly recommend that users do not install additional anti-malware tools.

Microsoft Windows Defender (Windows 10)

Defender is installed on Rose-Hulman issued machines and receives automatic updates from Microsoft.  To run a malware scan, please do the following:

  • Go to the Search Windows box and type Defender.
  • Click on the Windows Defender Desktop App to open it.
  • Select Quick, Full or Custom Scan.  Then click Scan Now.

System Center Endpoint Protection (Windows 7)

Endpoint is installed on Rose-Hulman issued machines and receives automatic updates from EIT. You can run scans by doing the following:

  • Go to Start, All Programs, System Center Endpoint Protection.
  • Select Quick, Full, or Custom Scan.  Then click Scan Now.

Other Recommendations

  • Run scans from both your localmgr and your user account.
  • Run scans from safe mode (press F8 while the computer is starting up to access safe mode).
  • If you continue to experience malware issues, bring your laptop to Service Desk for a reload. This is the only way to ensure that all malware is removed.

Service Desk Support for Removing Malware

Due to the intense time requirements and the low success rate of trying to remove malware infections, EIT Service Desk will not remove malware from laptops. Reloading is the only guaranteed way of ensuring all malware is removed from the system because the entire hard drive is erased, backing up only the user's personal data (these files are screened for malware during the backup process).
If a student does not wish to clean their laptop of malware, or they encounter malware which is resistant to cleaning, they can bring their laptop to the Service Desk for a reload. While a reload may not be convenient, it is the only solution guaranteed to be 100% effective at removing all malware.
